Freshman outside hitter Lauren Frye compiled 18 kills as Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team posted a 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16 non-league victory over New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday night at Greyhound Arena.
It was the home finale for the Zias (8-17), who finish with Lone Star Conference matches at Texas A&M-Commerce on Fridasy and at Texas Woman’s on Saturday.
Fort Sumner senior Bree Lucero added nine kills and a match-high six total blocks (all assists) for the Zias. Middle blocker Kaitlyn Maddams had eight kills and 11 digs, while senior libero Hayley Couch collected 242 assists and junior setter Kennedi Catano had 24 assists.
Darian Mullen led the Cowgirls (12-15) with 10 kills, while Lexis Satele posted a double-double with 15 digs and 11 assists.
The Zias erased a 4-1 deficit in the first set with a 10-1 run fueled by two kills and a block assist from Lucero and a block, a block assist and two kills from Frey. After Highlands closed to 19-15, the Zias finished off the set with a 6-2 run.
Except for a 1-1 tie, ENMU led all the way in the second set, although it stayed close throughout. Frye had a kill on set point.
There were 10 ties and six lead changes in the third game before the Cowgirls used three blocks to put together an 8-2 run to take control. ENMU took control of the fourth set with a 5-0 run for a 16-8 lead, with Gibbons recording two kills and a block assist during the run.
