Locals: No deal beats family

As Black Friday sales crop up earlier and earlier each year, many area shoppers are planning to avoid Thanksgiving Day sales to spend time with their families.

Several local retailers will open Thanksgiving evening to accommodate early Black Friday deals, including 10 stores at the North Plains Mall, according to General Manager Cindy Banister.

Walmart in Clovis and Portales will be open 24 hours through Thanksgiving, with sales beginning at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

Melrose resident Twila Gorley said retailers are punishing customers who have their priorities in order by offering sales during a time meant to be spent with family.

“Sure, I’d like to get some of the deals these folks will,” she said. “But Thanksgiving Day and the day after is family time. I won’t give up my family time for a few bucks off of something.”

National chain Dillard’s seems to agree, and will not open any of their stores nationwide until Friday to allow its employees time with family on Thanksgiving Day.

Donovan Johnson of Portales also echoed the sentiment.

“I don’t agree with the Thursday sales personally,” he said. “People should be able to focus on family for Thanksgiving, not spending money.”

Many shoppers also agree they would prefer to do their sale shopping online or after the big rush on Friday.

“Personally I’m not a Black Friday shopper, because the fights and lines are ridiculous,” said Clovis resident Renee Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said for any deals she’s interested in pursuing, she prefers to wait until Saturday to avoid the crowds, especially at Walmart in Clovis.

Kathleen Villanes of Clovis said while she enjoys Black Friday shopping, moving sales to Thanksgiving is pushing the envelope.

“I love it, but it’s getting out of hand with the stores starting it on Thanksgiving now,” she said. “It’s called Black Friday not Thursday.”

Not everyone is against the Thanksgiving Day sales and Laura Gomez of Portales said she believes the most competitive people will be up to get the best deals.

“I think the Thursday sales are cool,” she said. “The people that want the stuff will get up the earliest. You’ve got to hustle to get what you want.”
