MORIARTY — The Portales Rams have breezed through the first two rounds of the Moriarty Invitational. Now they expect a stiff test from defending Class 5A runnerup Mayfield in the finals.
Sophomores Kambrey Blakeyand Sheraya Cox combined for 25 points and the Lady Rams hit a robust 23-of-28 from the free throw line on Friday night to blow out the host Lady Pintos 65-31.
PHS (5-0) will face Mayfield (3-2), which lost to Clovis in last year’s Class 5A state championship game.
First-year coach Wade Fraze said he’s looking forward to the matchup.
“They’re pretty good,” he said of the Trojans. “They played for the (5A) championship last year, and they have a lot of players back.
“I welcome the challenge. It’s going to do nothing but make us better down the road.”
Blakey poured in 15 points, including two of the Lady Rams’ four 3-pointers, while Cox added 10. Fraze also singled out the play of senior guard Francis Armijo.
“This is probably the best game is seen Francis Armijo play,” he said. “She does so many things for us that don’t show up in the box score.”
As was the case in Thursday’s 59-31 win over Bernalillo, the Lady Rams (5-0) took off in the second half. Leading by 13 points, they outscored the Lady Pintos 31-10 in the final two stanzas.
“I think the kids kin of settle down in the second half,” Fraze said. “That’s the thing about this bunch — they see things that happen in the first half, and they work to correct it.”
Alyssa Adams led Moriarty with 14 points.
