CANYON, Texas — Clovis High’s girls passed their biggest test of the season so far on Friday night — and without one of their best players.
Senior guard Nichele Hyman and junior guard Danni Williams scored 17 points each, and the unbeaten Lady Wildcats threw Canyon off-track with a change in defenses in the final quarter to post a 50-45 victory over the Lady Eagles.
CHS (9-0) went to a pressure defense in the final quarter and outscored the Lady Eagles 19-13.
“We caught them off-guard,” Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed said. “We forced some turnovers and got some quick fouls, and were able to make some free throws.”
Senior guard Brandi Gomez, who sat much of the first half after picking up two early fouls, finished with 10 points for the Lady Cats. CHS led by one point at the half, then trailed by one after three quarters before taking control.
Clovis played without junior post Shelby Jones, who suffered injuries in an automobile accident on Thursday. Reed, who hoped Jones might be able to play in Friday’s game, said he thinks she should be good to go for the Lady Cats’ Plateau Holiday Classic next weekend at The Rock.
“Nichele and Danni really stepped up, and Carrie (Sharp) hit a big 3-pointer in the second quarter,” Reed said.
Senior post Madison Parker was the only player in double figures for Canyon (13-3) with a game-high 20 points.
Hyman, who had a personal scoring best in the game, went 5-for-5 from the line and hit two free throws to give CHS an eight-point lead in the final period. Canyon got as close as three late in the closing seconds, but junior Dee Briggons converted a layup against Canyon’s pressure to seal the win.
Next week’s six-team event will have everyone playing twice on Friday, with final-round games set for Saturday. The Lady Cats face Amarillo Caprock at noon and Sandia at 6 p.m.
