In the first half, Tucumcari’s John Paul Garcia went off from downtown.

When Portales tried to take that away, senior Cody Ryen picked up the slack in the second half.

Garcia scored 16 of his 24 points in the first two periods and Ryan had all but four of his 27 after halftime Tuesday night as the Rattlers secured a 69-59 win over the Rams at the RAC.

Garcia, a sophomore, scored two baskets in the final 35 seconds of the opening period to give the Rattlers (11-9) a 14-10 lead they never relinquished. Tucumcari, which played its starters virtually all the way, led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter and by 12 with five minutes left before fending off a late PHS bid.

“We got a little lazy towards the end, but our kids battled,” Rattlers coach John Span said. “If we’re hitting shots, we’re pretty good; if not, we’re not very good.”

Garcia hit four of his five 3-pointers in the opening half to help the Rattlers build a 27-22 lead.

“We couldn’t get enough defensive stops,” Rams coach Rickie McBroom said of his team’s comeback bid. “We’d make a run and we couldn’t get the key stop when we needed it.”

The Rams (10-9) went inside early and often to senior post Zach Campbell, and he responded with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Nathan Chavez, meantime, scored all 15 of his points in the final period — including three 3-pointers — to lead the comeback.

PHS played without senior forward Daniel Sanchez, who went down early in Saturday’s win at Moriarty with a sprained ankle. McBroom said he doesn’t expect Sanchez back for Saturday’s home game against New Mexico Military.

“We’re not going to rush him back,” McBroom said. “It’s (injuries) part of the game. You just continue to do the best you can.”

The Rattlers had a little trouble putting the game away at the free throw line, going just 9-for-17 in the final period. While Ryen (7-for-7) and Garcia (3-for-4) were solid, guards D’Ontee Sandoval, who had 10 points, and Ronald Carmichael combined to go just 3-for-13 for the game.

“We’ve lost five games this year because of free throws,” said Span, whose team begins District 4-2A play with games against Santa Rosa on Friday and at Clayton on Saturday. “We need to start hitting those from here on out.”

Senior guard Isaiah Alvarado added 10 points for the Rams.
