No. 6 WT whips Zias

CANYON, Texas — Junior forward-center Chontiquah White posted a double-double and No. 6 West Texas A&M used a 12-0 first-half run to break open a close game en route to an 82-54 Lone Star Conference women’s basketball victory on Saturday over Eastern New Mexico University.

White went 9-for-12 from the field and scored 20 points, leading five Lady Buffs in double figures, and added 10 rebounds as WT (17-1, 8-0 LSC) stretched its winning streak to 10 games.

Junior post Jasmine Johnson led the Zias (6-11, 4-4) with 15 points, hitting 7-of-11 field goals, while sophomore guard Jordyn Cooper added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Zias erased an early 9-3 deficit on two baskets by Johnson and one by freshman Cara Barnard, then took their only lead of the game at 14-13 on a basket by sophomore Nelsha Peterson with 13:18 left in the half.

Junior point guard Lakeeyscia Griffin’s basket tied the game at 16-16. WT regained the lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guard Sally Higgins, but field goals by Barnard and Johnson pulled ENMU to 22-20 just past the midway point of the half.

Junior forward Jordan Vessels started the game-breaking run with a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer, and senior guard Casey Land capped it with a pair of 3s for a 34-20 lead with less than 4 1/2 minutes to go until halftime.

The Zias never got the margin into single figures after that.

WT shot 55 percent for the game, including 9-of-20 from 3-point range, and outrebounded the Zias 40-29.

Senior forward Devin Griffin added 12 points, Land finished with 11 and Higgins and junior guard-forward Lacee Logan each scored 10 points for the Lady Buffs, who had 23 assists on their 30 baskets.
