Portales boys basketball capsule — Feb. 27

District 4-3A tournament

No. 3 Portales (13-12) at No. 2 Ruidoso (10-16)

When: 6 p.m. today

Radio: KSEL 105.9

Last time out: The Rams fell 60-45 at Ruidoso on Friday. The Warriors fell 57-50 to Lovington in the tiebreaker game Monday in Roswell.

Season series: The teams have so far split their games this season, with the Rams pulling out a 39-35 win Feb. 7.

Mutual opponents: The Rams and Warriors have played eight common teams, with Portales going 5-5 and Ruidoso going 4-8.

Impact: The winner goes to Lovington (12-14) for the district championship Saturday night. A win would help each team gain in the Class 3A seeding, and it’s highly unlikely a loss would do too much damage to either. Going by record alone, Portales is ninth, Lovington 12th and Ruidoso 13th, meaning the district champion may be the only 4-3A team to receive one of the top eight seeds and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. All three teams are likely to make the 16-team field, given that the 19-team Class 3A includes five teams with eight or fewer wins.
