Chet Spear, a former Curry County Sheriff’s deputy and jail administrator, has announced he will run for the District 3 Curry County Commission seat in the June Republican primary election.
The District 3 seat is held by Commission Chairman Frank Blackburn, who is term-limited and unable to seek re-election. Greg Southard has also announced plans to seek the position.
Spear said he is running to represent all constituents in District 3, not himself or any special interests.
“I have been a resident of Curry County since 1977 and have never been approached by an elected official asking me my opinion on any issue whatsoever,” Spear said in a prepared statement. “That needs to be changed.
“I will reach out to my constituents on major issues seeking their input and make decisions based on what the consensus think, not only what I think.”
Spear is a Vietnam veteran. His career includes stints as an Air Force special agent, 13 years as a sheriff’s deputy, Curry County jail administrator and he recently retired after 20 years as a private investigator.
Spear and his wife, Joan, are the parents of three sons.
Candidates must file on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the county clerk’s office.
