Midwestern State opened Lone Star Conference play last weekend by taking two of three from previously unbeaten West Texas A&M, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II.
After getting behind early on Friday, the Mustangs picked right up where they left off against Eastern New Mexico University, completing a three-game sweep on Saturday with a 9-0, run-rule-shortened victory at Zia Softball Field.
- The Mustangs (17-9, 5-1 LSC) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning of Friday’s opener, but rallied to win 8-4 and then took the second game of the doubleheader 11-3.
Shortstop Katy Vandewater, designated player Baylee Voight and right fielder Katelyn Vinson drove in two runs each for MSU (17-9, 5-1 LSC). Vinson capped the scoring with with a two-run homer in the fifth, while Vandewater had a two-run single in the Mustangs’ four-run third and Voight hit a pair of run-scoring groundouts.
Meantime, pitcher Katlyn Hawkins (7-4) made it stand up, allowing the Zias (7-14, 1-5) only two baserunners in a 55-pitch outing. One came on an error, and the other on a one-out single in the third by Amanda Mrtinez, who was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Freshman Cailin Garmon (3-9) was chased in MSU’s four-run third.
