ROSWELL — The Portales High softball team had something of a rarity in recent years early on Tuesday evening — a losing streak.
However, the Lady Rams will host Clovis on Thursday with a chance to start another winning streak after splitting against Roswell High, losing 9-5 in the opener before winning 11-7.
The second game, won with senior Francis Armijo making a rare pitching perfrormance, was a bright spot on the last few days following its 5-0 start.
“When you can get a split on the road, that’s a positive,” Portales coach Robbie Crowley. “We didn’t play very well (in Monday’s 15-1 loss to Hobbs). While we lost the first game here, we had one error. They hit the ball well. You take care of the things you can control.”
Senior catcher Simone Laurenz went 2-for-4 in the doubleheader with two homers and five runs batted in, while third baseman Kailee Ramirez went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer in the nightcap.
Armijo was called into duty in the second game, with Kiersten Ramirez bothered by shoulder pain.
Portales will resume its season with a 4:30 p.m. home game against Clovis on Thursday.
