Four Lady Rams notch NMHSCA honors in 3A

ALBUQUERQUE — Four members of the Class 3A state champion Portales High girls basketball team have been accorded all-state honors in their classification by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

The Lady Rams completed a 25-5 season on March 15 with a 62-59 overtime win over previously unbeaten Shiprock in the 3A title game at The Pit in Albuquerque.

Blakey was also recently chosen the District 4-3A defensive player of the year, while Armijo, Cox, Vincent and junior post McKenzie Bucksath were selected to the all-district team.

Vincent was selected for the South squad in the NMHSCA’s Class 2-3A all-star game at 6 p.m. on June 7 at West Mesa H.S. in Albuquerque, and Armijo was chosen as an alternate.

Meantime, senior post Zach Campbell represented PHS on the coaches’ Class 3A boys first team. Campbell was also named the District 4-3A co-player of the year, and has been chosen to the South squad for the NMHSCA’s 2A/3A all-star game and the Golden Spread all-star game later this summer in Amarillo.

The boys’ 2A/3A all-star game will follow the girls contest at 7:30 p.m. on June 7 at West Mesa.

Other Rams all-district choices included seniors Caleb Burciaga, Daniel Sanchez, Jarret Faust, Nathan Chavez and Isaiah Alvarado, and junior Matt Martinez. Burciaga was named the district’s defensive player of the year.

Six area players were selected to small-school all-state teams by the NMHSCA.

For the boys, Dora senior Dylan Privett was a first-team selection in Class 1A while on the girls side, Floyd’s Tabitha Ornelas was chosen to the first team and Dora’s Taylor Dillard to the second squad.

Four-time Class B champion Elida had three honorees, with seniors Hunter Haley and Kaylen Jasso and junior Marily Varela on the first team and freshman Madi Haley on the second team.

Haley and Jasso were named to the North squad for the Class 1A/B girls all-star game, while Dora’s Micaah Pallares and Floyd’s Tessa Nall and Tabitha Ornelas were picked for the South squad. Dora’s Dylan Privett and Jestin Watson will be on the boys South contingent.

The 1A/B girls game will be played on June 6 and the 1A/B boys game on July 31, both at 6 p.m., also at West Mesa.
