Riding outstanding pitching all weekend, Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team completed its first series sweep of Tarleton State, taking Saturday’s doubleheader 3-2 and 4-2 at Greyhound Field.
The second game was called in the eighth inning due to rain and lightning.
ENMU (19-17, 9-14 Lone Star Conference), which won Friday’s series opener 4-3, captured its first series win in LSC play after splitting one and losing three out of four in the other four series. The LSC is beginning its second time through conference play this weekend, with series now three games. The sweep lifted ENMU past Tarleton State into fourth place in the six-team conference.
ENMU erased a 2-0 deficit in the seven-inning opener with a three-run sixth off the Texans’ Colton Burleson (3-4).
Catcher Steven Moore led off with an infield hit and stole second. With one out, Brett Ackerman beat out an infield hit to put runners at the corners.
Sam Hedrick then dropped a squeeze bunt to get Moore home. Blake Cooper followed with a run-scoring single to left and took second on an outfield error. After another error put runners at first and third, left fielder Rawley Gomez put the Hounds in front with an RBI single to left.
Matthew Artelejo finished with a four-hitter, walking one and striking out five. Gomez and Hedrick each had two of ENMU’s nine hits.
In the second game, the Hounds jumped on Tarleton State’s Kyle Gottardy (2-3) for two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Left-hander Rusty Edwards (4-3) pitched into the sixth, and Sheldon Mobley was credited with his first save after striking out two and retiring all five hitters he faced.
ENMU got a run-scoring single from Matthew Burks and a squeeze bunt from Ackerman to take the lead in the third, while Gomez singled home a run and scored on Rafael Romo’s double in the fourth.
Edwards gave up a one-out double to Alfaro Moreno in the first, then retired 11 in a row before pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth created by two hit batsmen and a walk.
The Texans scored twice in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Luke Slentz, chasing Edwards, and a squeeze bunt by Kevin Meredith. Mobley struck out Eddie Robinson to end the inning.
