CANYON, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University captured two event wins each in men’s and women’s competition on Saturday in the West Texas A&M Open track meet.
Senior Isaiah Samoei, running a race of less than 1,500 meters at ENMU for the first time, edged WT’s Martin Puga by .13 seconds to take the men’s 800 in 1 minute, 56.96 seconds. Meantime, freshman Jesus Rivera of Texico earned first place in men’s javelin with a throw of 176 feet, followed by teammate Tanaka Pfupajena at 164-8.
Winners on the women’s side were junior Sabrina Huelga in the 1,000 at 3:02.50 and freshman Bayleigh Baker in the 5,000 with a time of 19:32.64.
Also for the Zias, junior Kris-Ann Walters was second in long jump with a season-best 18-6, junior Laura Grube finished third in discus at 132-5 and third in javelin with a season-best throw of 140-4, sophomore Jenae Wolfram was fourth in shot put in a season-best 36-10 1/4, junior Brenda Pendleton placed fourth in hammer at 140-0 and sophomore Clarissa Salazar was sixth in shot put at 36-0 1/4.
Meantime, on the track, Huelga finished third in the 800 at 2:23.28, sophomore Amber Saiz was second in 4:46.19 in the 1,500 and third in the 1,000 at 3:07.10, and junior Alesha Jones took third place in the 400 at 59.41.
Other placers for the Greyhounds included sophomore Michael Moore, second in high jump at 6-4 3/4, and senior Jacob Lozano and freshman Mason Thomas, second in 4:10.58 and third in 4:12.68, respectively, in the 1,500.
ENMU track squads are back in action in the Mt. Sac Relays from Thursday through Saturday at Walnut, Calif., and the Long Beach State Classic on Thursday and Friday at Cerritos, Calif.
