RUIDOSO — Portales High’s boys came in 11th in a 17-team field while the girls are last out of 14 teams after Monday’s first round of the Leroy Gooch Invitational golf tournament.
The PHS boys shot a four-man score of 357, while the girls finished at 445, three shots behind Carlsbad.
The tournament was delayed a couple of hours by the frigid temperatures. The girls played as scheduled at The Links of Sierra Blanca, while boys play was moved from Alto Lakes Country Club to Cree Meadows Golf Course.
In today’s final round, the girls play at Cree Meadows while the boys will compete at The Links.
New Mexico Military shot 307 for a 10-stroke lead over Socorro in boys competition. Clovis is third at 322, followed by Hobbs at 325.
Freshman Andrew Underlink led the Rams, shooting 42-41 — 83, while junior Ty Bergman came in at 45-41 — 86. Senior Jory Nix, meantime, rebounded from a 61 on the front nine to shoot at 38 and finish at 99.
Cruces’ Nick Gillihan shot 1-over 72 to lead boys medalist play after the opening round. Artesia’s Caleb Morton is second at 73.
Deming, meantime, has a sizable lead in the girls tournament after shooting a opening-round 334. Socorro is second at 364, and Las Cruces High third at 385. The individual leader in the tournament is Deming’s Darian Zachek at 4-over 76, one shot ahead of Shania Berger of Socorro.
Sophomore Bailey Rowley led the Lady Rams, shooting a score of 89. Sophomore Kambrey Blakey followed at 106 for easily her best score so far this spring.
