ROSWELL — Portales High’s boys were bunched together in terms of scores on Monday, but the Rams couldn’t keep up with a field that shot the lights out.
Ten of the 16 boys teams in the Spring Classic golf tournament shot 313 or better at New Mexico Military Golf Course, led by Las Cruces High at 297. The Rams were in 14th place after the first day at 351.
The girls, playing at Spring River Golf Course, had a more “ordinary” day despite the fact that par was 72 compared with 71 at NMMI. Deming rolled to a 34-stroke lead with a score of 313, while PHS was 12th out of 14 teams at 418.
Sophomore Bailey Rowley, who had already earned the necessary three legs to qualify for state Class 1A-3A competition next month, nonetheless racked up a fourth leg after shooting 43-47 — 90.
Meantime, all five PHS boys shot 94 or better. Freshman Andrew Underlink led the way with a round of 43-41 — 84, while junior Ty Bergman shot 44-43 — 87 and junior Jordan Barros came in with a season-best 43-45 — 88.
The boys and girls will switch courses for today’s final 18 holes.
