LAS CRUCES — Portales High sophomore Bailey Rowley shot a first-day 42-44 — 86 on Monday in the Class 1A-3A state golf tournament and finds herself in a tie for ninth place with Ruidoso’s Alexa Davis.
Rowley is the only representative for PHS in the state meet, being contested at the New Mexico State golf course.
The second and final round of the tournament is on tap for today.
Lady Rams coach Charity Gomez said that, except for a couple of holes, Rowley had a solid round.
“She putted really, really well,” Gomez said. “She got herself out of trouble all day long.”
The top six individuals medal in the tournament. Rowley has her work cut out to do that, as Bosque’s Emily Ellis is currently sixth at 80.
“If she plays like she did today, it’ll be awesome,” Gomez said.
Bosque currently has a two-shot lead over tournament favorite Socorro in the girls team standings. The girls individual leader is Socorro’s Shania Berger at even-par 72.
On the boys side, Hope Christian shot 316 for a seven-stroke lead over Socorro. The Huskies’ Sean Carlon shot a two-under 70 for a seven stroke lead over Sandia Prep’s Isaac Alderete.
