Portales rallies to win opener at Hobbs

HOBBS — It wasn’t perfect by any means, but Portales’ early season record is.

The visiting Rams rallied back from a 2-1 deficit and controlled the final two games in a 22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-12, 15-7 victory Tuesday night at Ralph Tasker Arena in Hobbs.

Portales, in its first match as a Class 4A school, trailed 3-1 early in the elimination-situation fourth game, but responded with a pair of 5-0 runs to take control of the set. With the score tied at 6-6, Kaycee Leary had a kill that kickstarted a 5-0 run.

Portales (1-0) never lost the lead again.

Hobbs, which faces Las Cruces Centennial Saturday, dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Portales is idle until next Friday, when it begins play in the Moriarty Invitational.
