PHS boys second at Lovington

LOVINGTON — The Clovis Wildcats edged the Portales High School boys golf team in a playoff Wednesday to win the Murphy Black Invitational. After 18 holes, the two teams were tied at 305, but experience and good putts made the difference in a one-hole playoff, according to PHS coach Patrick Crowley. Artesia, who had beaten Portales earlier in the season, finished at 313, Roswell 314, Lovington 319, Goddard 321 and NMMI 329. “Having four guys in the 70s was really nice,” Crowley said. “This is more what they’re capable of doing.” Crowley said his team, comprised of three sophomores and two seniors, is harder on themselves than he is. The coach said that is quickly leading to the Rams being mentally better in their game. The Rams qualified for state in their first outing at Clovis last month. “We’ve yet to put together the perfect round with everybody hitting their peak at the same time,” Crowley said. “We’re doing well for this point in the season.” Clovis’ Tyler Fontenot won the tournament with a 3-over-par 74. Portales senior Jefferson Powers along with sophomores Donavin Sanchez and William Archibeque tied for second with Chris Speck of Artesia at 76. Kyle Wornell recorded an 85 while Garrett Hatch shot a 92 for the Rams. The Rams are back in action Monday and Tuesday in Roswell.
