ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Wylie held Clovis High’s girls to single figures in every quarter Thursday night en route to a 38-24 win over the Lady Wildcats in the first round of the Polk-Key City Tournament.
The Lady Cats (1-1) will come back with a 3:30 p.m. (MST) consolation game against Lubbock Coronado today. Coronado lost in the first round to Connally, Texas.
“We played a good team,” CHS girls coach Miles Watters said. “We never could get it figured out on the offensive end, but I’ve got to say the kids played hard to the end.”
Wylie (4-3) extended a three-point lead at the quarter to 19-11 at halftime and was never seriously threatened.
“Wylie dId a good job of defending us,” Watters said. “Those guys have had more games than we’ve had practices.”
Sophomore Antiesha Brown led Clovis with eight points, followed by junior Brittany Johnson with six. While Watters was pleased with his team’s defensive work, he noted the Lady Bulldogs held CHS to just 10 field goals for the game.
“We played out of control (on offense),” Watters said. “There wasn’t anybody who had a very good night offensively.
“We have to feel pretty good to hold a pretty good team under 40."
