Roosevelt County 4-H members won big at the 89th annual New Mexico State 4-H Conference earlier this month in Las Cruces.

Members placed in five competitions including Livestock Skill-a-thon, Livestock Judging, Home Ec Skill-a-thon, Pasture and Range Evaluation and Land Judging.

Roosevelt County 4-H members placed in each contest as followed:

Livestock Skill-a-thon contest: The primary goal of this contest is for 4-H members to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of animal science and livestock management practices.

  •  Kobe Cone in first.
  •  Mikaela Cone in fourth.
  •  Lindsey Lee in ninth.
  •  Jasi Roberts in 13th
  •  Kynzi Creighton in 18th.
  •  Kenzee Criswell in 28th.

 The overall team consisting of Koby Cone, Mikaela Cone, Kenzee Criswell, and Kynzi Creighton placed third. 

Livestock Judging Contest: Members judged eight classes of breeding and market beef, sheep, swine and meat goats.

  •  Kenzee Criswell in second.
  •  Koby Cone in third.
  •  Mikaela Cone in sixth.
  •  Kynzi Creighton in 12th.
  •  Jasi Roberts in 23rd.
  •  Lane Wallace in 34th.

Roosevelt County had two different teams competing in Livestock Judging: Team 1 members Koby Cone, Mikaela Cone and Jasi Roberts placed first overall. Team 2 members Kenzee Criswell, Kynzi Creighton and Lane Wallace placed fifth overall.

 

Home Ec Skill-a-thon: Members had to identify foods and cooking techniques, sewing and clothing, housing and interior design and financial management.

  •   Kynzi Creighton in sixth.
  •  Jasi Roberts in ninth.
  •  Lindsey Lee in 14th.

 The team consisting of the three members placed second overall.

 

Pasture and Range Evaluation: The contest initiates a realistic, contemporary and scientifically based view of rangeland ecosystems.

  • Justus Criswell was the only participant from Roosevelt County and he placed in third.

 

Land Judging: Consists of evaluating field conditions, types of soil, suitability for farming and best use of land.

  •  Justus Criswell in fourth
  •  Koby Cone in sixth
  •  Jasi Roberts in seventh.

The team consisting of the three members placed second overall.
