A trio of local youths have qualified for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo, scheduled to being Sunday in Gallup.

The competitors are:

• Hannah Hughes, an eighth-grader at Texico Junior High, competing in barrels and breakaway
• Shelby Mayfield, a seventh-grader at Yucca Middle School, competing in pole bending
• Madison Haley, a seventh-grader at Portales Junior High, competing in goat tying.

Featuring more than 1,000 contestants from 47 states, Canadian provinces and Australia, the rodeo includes $75,000 in prizes and more than $100,000 in college scholarships.
