Portales Past: April 21, 1955

April 21, 1955: Three dogs were blamed for killing 30 of Jim Wade’s chickens on the western edge of Portales. Wade said his grandson witnessed the dawn attack. The dogs, who did not eat any of their kill, ran away when Wade opened the door to the hen house.

According to the Portales News-Tribune, Fire Chief Newman Carter blamed an over-heated heating stove flue for a $2,000 fire that burned the roof off of one unit of the Miller Apartments at 712 East Braos at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
