Portales Past: April 4, 1950

April 4, 1950: Former mayor Floyd T. Kennedy was re-elected by Portales voters after a four-year absence. Kennedy defeated future New Mexico Gov. John Burroughs, 916 votes to 596.

Nov. 1, 1960

Gov. John Burroughs told a hometown audience last night that he has confidence in the future of Eastern New Mexico University, and despite “vicious political rumors” has scruptiously refrained from taking any action in the university’s recent travail.

August 1, 1960

• A group representing the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce met with Gov. John Burroughs in an effort to designate Taylor’s Grove as a state park. • A three pound carton of Mrs. Tuckers shortening was on sale for 55 cents at Franks University Food Market.

May 10, 1960

• Gov. and Mrs. John Burroughs returned to Portales from Santa Fe to cast their votes in the Democratic Primary election.
