May 3, 1945: Area residents learned of the death of Capt. Laverne Nicklas of Dora. He was serving with Gen. George Patton’s Third Army when he was killed in action in Germany on April 16, The Portales Daily News reported.

The Portales Daily News reported that at a recent city council meeting, councilors decided the city would begin hauling trash from back alleys of residential areas the following week. Jack Patton and James Kiker of the Clean-up, Fix-up, Paint-up Campaign had appealed for help in keeping Portales clean.

Clovis women win $50,000 in scratch-off games
